In Detail

The No. 4 1/2 smoothing plane comes with a lever cap, Norris style adjuster and a cap iron. The body is fully stress-relieved ductile cast iron. Precision machining of the sole ensures it is flat and square to the sides. Two tapped holes in either side allow the mounting of an optional side fence.

Hardened to HRC 61-63, PM-V11 steel has a fine, consistent structure. It provides significantly greater resistance to both impact and wear. It can take a keen edge and hold it at least twice as long before it needs sharpening. Once dull, the edge can be restored using water stones or other sharpening methods.

Custom 4.5 Bench Plane.

You will not be able to buy a more professionally dedicated 4.5 smoothing plane than this. Use the V11 blade, hone and micro-bevel and strop to a mirror finish. Set to a barely visible mouth and you won't need sanding, though I finish off with flour paper to bring the wood to a soft gleam before polishing. I bought all three frogs plus a spare blade...always handy to have one to match the frog angle you're using...and there is no grain or knot this plane won't deal with. Lie Neilson does not even come close, but that's only my opinion. Veritas Custom 4.5 is a Hellishly expensive plane but if you work to exacting tolerances then this plane will provide, and has to be personally worth it. That does not mean the price is justified of course but is only the price you have to pay to get it! There is only one problem with this plane, and that is getting it from Axminster when it is out of stock. They are, it seems, unable to give a reliable date when available and seem to keep on extending arrival dates. I waited three months! So if you're planning a job where you want this sort of accuracy, wait until you have the plane in you're shed!

Top class plane

This is the best smoother I have ever used, i have a full collection off pre war usa Stanley's which are super planes, which i love using so i was curious to want the lie Nielsen bedrock planes where like as i have the LN no62, i love planes as they are my bread and butter and wanted to purchase myself a new set which where going to be lie Nielsen to use along side my Stanley's for the next 40 years, but the Veritas changed that there custom bench planes are unbelievably good planes that are in my opinion a step above the bailey planes in terms off build and features, there is little if any difference between them and the pre Stanley's in terms off shavings but they are just so much more in terms off adjustable mouth in stead off the frog and the blade set screws you can also use a fence to aid squaring edges and the engineering is second to none. The price is high compared to the old planes but for a craftsman who is in the markets for their own new plane to serve them a lifetime this is the one. Plus it can used as a scrub and a finishing plane just with a turn of the front knob brilliant plane
