In Detail

The No. 5 Jack Plane comes with a lever cap, Norris style adjuster and a cap iron. The body is fully stress-relieved ductile cast iron. Precision machining of the sole ensures it is flat and square to the sides. Two tapped holes in either side allow the mounting of an optional side fence.

Hardened to HRC 61-63, PM-V11 steel has a fine, consistent structure. It provides significantly greater resistance to both impact and wear. It can take a keen edge and hold it at least twice as long before it needs sharpening. Once dull, the edge can be restored using water stones or other sharpening methods.

lovely plane

I looked into this plane a lot before I bought it, I love its moveable mouth and have found it to come in really useful especially on tough grains or to help get a really fine pass over with the plane. When I first bought the plane I went to tighten the front knob up to lock the mouth in place and it wouldn't, the problem was with the knob itself where the threaded bar inside was moving but axminster were great in sorting the issue for me. Overall the plane is lovely to use, some excellent features and a joy to use. I do wish we could buy the side fence that uses the threaded inserts instead of the magnetic ones currently sold at axminster but that's all. It has taken me awhile to get use to as I am normally using record planes but if you are looking for a jack plane to add to your collection to get the job done, this could be the one.
