In Detail

The No. 6 Fore Plane is ideal for smoothing and flattening large surfaces, such as panels, table tops and workbench tops. The long sole ensures accuracy when shooting edges as it will not follow the bumps and valleys that a shorter plane would. At just under 3kg and with a sole 457mm long, it is one of our largest bench planes. Supplied with 60mm wide lapped 25° blade in O1 or PM-V11 alloy steel. The lapped blades have a flatness tolerance of ±0.005mm or better over the working surface, and with an average roughness surface finish of 0.000127mm(5 micro inches) or better.

Beautiful Plane

I have a set of Lie Nielson apart from the no6, and decided to buy the Veritas plane as I love their scrub plane. The feel of a plane is a very personal thing, but I can categorically state that I prefer the feel of the Veritas planes to that of the Lie Nielson. The larger uncluttered area around the handle coupled with the effective blade setting system makes this for me the perfect plane. Straight out of the box I can take shavings as thin as those that I achieve off my LN smoothing planes.

I would if buying again, try both the LN and LV planes and make your own mind up, just don't be put off like I was originally by the 'quirky' design compared to the traditional look at a LV. They are both excellent planes.
