In Detail

A versatile tool for fine work, particularly on narrow material or in confined areas. The sole is designed to completely encircle the blade when in the closed-throat position for maximum registration to the workpiece, even when approaching from the side or working the edge. This also allows it to bridge recesses, providing great stability even on narrow stock. The blade may be positioned inboard for standard closed-throat use, or outboard, where the cutting edge of the blade extends beyond the body, for true bullnose work. The blade-clamping knob has been positioned behind the blade to allow visibility and chip clearance. The comfortable ductile cast iron body is accurately machined and features a lapped sole. The plane is 82.5mm(3.1/4") wide and 57mm(2.1/4") deep, with a 6.35mm(1/4") wide high-carbon steel blade. Weight 200g(7oz).

I wish I had read the review

Not sure why the shaft on the blade is round. It twists under any load. Poor design.

Very nicely made

This is a good example of how nicely woodworking tools can be made. Smooth perfectly finished castings, well made adjustment knob and a blade correctly sharpened for use straight out of the box.
You need to tighten the blade clamp tightly to avoid it twisting under load, but I've not found it to be a major problem in use.

Nice little Router Plane

I've had this little router plane for a while, and only just had time to give it a good workout. Ok I have read reviews about the blade twisting, I can honestly say I never found that problem, in fact it griped the shaft that well, I found it quiet hard to loosen. As for setting the depth I just left it in the grove, placed a cigarette paper under the soul at each side, dropped the blade and could take one thou shavings.

Lie-Nielsen have brought out a depth stop for there small router plane, It would be nice if Veritas could do the same.

Not great

I thought I'd use it to cut recesses for inlays, but even at this depth, i's quite hard to use. The blade twists however hard you tighten the screw, and you feel you've lost the depth, and adjusting the depth is not great. Avoid.

OK at what it can do.

It is indeed small, though the hand grips are adequate. It's quite limited in use, since it seems really only to be effective at smoothing out the bottom of an existing groove. I tried to use it to deepen a rebate and found it difficult: the blade tends to twist, and adjusting the depth to remove fine shavings is very hard because there is no screw adjuster.
