In Detail

Although filing and honing a cabinet scraper is relatively easy it is the raising of a burr where problems seem to occur. The Veritas Variable Burnisher completely eliminates this problem and makes this an easy job. The burnisher has carbide rods fixed at an angle in a brass hub. The dial on the face allows the angle to be set anywhere between 0° and 15°. You rotate the knurled brass knob to your chosen angle and then lock it into place with the brass thumbscrew. The body of the burnisher is slotted so the angle is constantly maintained during use and, being made of plastic, it will not damage or scratch the scraper's face. Woodworkers used to using a traditional burnishing tool will also find this useful since it can be used to put different cutting characteristics on different edges of a scraper. This Veritas tool makes it possible for anyone to burnish a cabinet scraper to the desired angle perfectly every time. Each set includes a cabinet scraper (150 x 60mm) and full instructions.

Veritas variable burnisher

I found this tool to be completely useless ...I just cannot get a burr at any angle let alone being given a choice.....I should have returned it

I read the above review and was not sure about purchasing this. I would agree that the quality and design of it is not perfect, but the idea is good - to be able to brush across the surface and given an even edge, then adjust the angle and give it a hook. As a design, it only requires a very small rod inside - so I can see why the price is lower.
The difficulty with using it, is the depth of the handle is quite large, and most scrapers are not very deep. So you need the scraper sticking out of the vice (or clamp in my case) by quite a lot - in fact, only a small amount of the scraper is left to clamp into the vice because it has to stick out so far! If I were to redesign, I would make that handle shallower in depth. However, it still works, and I can get it to work. I would try and mount the scraper vertically in a vice though, so you can get a little more pressure on it. Does it work any better than a normal burnisher? I do not know.
I am satisfied that the tool does it's job for me, and therefore, I am satisfied for the moment. I will continue to use it, because burnishers appear to be quite expensive, and I'm not ready to buy another one yet!

I have read some good reviews regarding this product and can only assume I have received something a bit duff! Followed instructions and it put a 5 degree bevel on and the scraper was good. Tried a 10 degree bevel on another edge - result nothing. So tried a 5 degree - nothing. Whatever I did I could not get any burr on that edge at all. Managed to put a burr on a 'normal' scraper I had in my possession ( i.e not super hard milled supplied) , but still could not get anything better than a 5 degree. So the variable feature was useless on this particular item. The burnisher looks like a good bit of Chinese plastic - very dissappointed and a bit disillusioned with Veritas quality. So I will have to review my intentions to buy other Veritas products. I should return it as faulty but if it puts a burr on my normal scrapers I am content as I have arthritic hands and find the normal burnishing process difficult.
